Getting Started

Learn to scuba dive on Koh Tao and you will have a new hobby for life. If you have never tried scuba diving before, then we would recommend you do a Try Dive (SSI) or a Discover Scuba Diving Program (PADI) first. These both offer a fantastic way to discover whether scuba diving is the right sport for you. You may begin by going into a swimming pool first or be taken straight into the ocean.

Its a great way to experience the underwater world with the direct supervision of an SSI or PADI Instructor, while removing all the practical and theoretical lessons that are necessary when completing a full beginners course. Both of these are normally a half day or one day experience and are also a great way to experience scuba diving if you are not staying long enough to complete the full beginners course (Open Water Course). You will learn some basic guidelines and safety exercises then enjoy a guided underwater tour of the waters surrounding Koh Tao to a maximum depth of 12 meters.

The next step is the Open Water Course, where you will learn and take part in Knowledge Development to understand the basic principles of scuba diving, Confined Water Dives to learn basic scuba skills and Open Water Dives to use your skills and explore. Completion of the 3 to 4 day program will then allow you to scuba dive to a maximum depth of  18 meters without the supervision of a dive instructor.  Certification is valid for life and is recognised world wide, whether you choose SSI or PADI. PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors)

Learn to scuba dive on Koh Tao with PADI – the world’s leading scuba diving training organisation with more than 6,000 dive shops and resorts worldwide. If you find comfort in numbers, then the agency with nearly one million certifications per year might just be for you!

The major benefit to diving with PADI comes at the professional level. For instructors and Divemasters, PADI provide far more employment opportunities, and PADI instructors can work independently (while an SSI instructor must teach through an SSI registered shop.) So, if you have dreams of staying in Thailand for good to teach the backpacker masses and you want to be loyal to one agency, PADI is your best bet.

An SSI course will typically cost you nearly 10% less than a PADI course. If you’re coming to Koh Tao specifically for its status as one of the world’s cheapest places to get certified, those extra baht can make a big difference.
